EVANGELIST WARS SYSOP'S GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
USING THIS SYSOP'S GUIDE
-------------------------------------------------------------
We assume that you are a System Operator (SYSOP) on a
Bulletin Board System (BBS). This text file contains the
information needed to run Evangelist Wars on your BBS. We
also assume that you are familiar with running your BBS
software and installing software on your computer. You may
want to refer to your BBS software manual for information on
installing a door game.
Background
-------------------------------------------------------------
Evangelist Wars was developed by three college students - John
Gibbard and Terry Ebaugh who wrote the story and did the programming,
and ANSI artist Jasper Ossentjuk, who painted the graphics and is
currently operating our support BBS.
Evangelist Wars ("EW") is easy to play and full of satire and
wit for those that have open minds. There are two different versions,
clean and dirty. While the graphics in Evangelist Wars are strictly
'rated G', some of the subject matter in the text of the dirty
version may be inappropriate for children. Strategically, both
versions play exactly the same, and you may have both 'clean' and 'dirty'
players in the same game at the same time.
Evangelist Wars was alpha tested on Absolute Value BBS (602)887-6043,
and beta tested by the following Tucson, Arizona sysops:
Larry Cooke, Commpost BBS, (602)571-9063
John Hansen, Arizona Connexxion, (602)770-1142
Ken Cottrell, The Doorway BBS, (602)293-3157
We would like to thank them and their callers for their feedback,
which has helped us to make many improvements in the game.
Special thanks also goes to Scott Baker, who developed the
modem control routines.
The shareware version of Evangelist Wars is copyrighted
material. It may be freely distributed if unaltered, and may
be used for a 30-day evaluation period. After that, a registration
is expected. The unregistered version is not crippled in any way,
but as an owner of a registered version of Evangelist Wars you
will be entitled to the following benefits:
1. The beg screen will be gone.
2. BBS support for general questions. Feel free to leave
electronic mail to: Terry Ebaugh, John Gibbard, or
Jasper Ossentjuk on The ABSOLUTE VALUE BBS, 24 hours/7
days. Number is: (602)888-7150.
3. The satisfaction of knowing that you have helped to support
the Shareware marketing system, which will bring you much
more quality software, and always lets you try before you
buy.
Registration is $10. Please see the file register.doc for more
details.

Files on the Program Diskette
------------------------------------------------------------
EXECUTABLE FILES. Evangelist Wars consists of four program
files.
SETUPEW.EXE initializes the game for play. It must be
run before the game can be played. It must
also be run before any NEW game can start.
This will also let you register the game
using a "key" if your registered.
EWMAINT.EXE (The Maintenance program) plays out the
activities that happen each day.
EWCLEAN.EXE The main Game Executable for the clean version.
EWDIRTY.EXE The main Game Executable for the dirty version.
Installing Evangelist Wars
------------------------------------------------------------
Installing Evangelist Wars is straightforward.
STEP 1. COPY THE PROGRAM FILES. Create a directory on your
hard disk to hold the program files (We call it \Evan).
Copy ALL game files into the newly created directory.
STEP 2. Edit the file evang.cfg (a plain ascii text file) to set
up the game for your BBS type. The file is well-commented
and should be easy to edit. If you are using door.sys as
your drop file, you may be able to skip this step.
STEP 3. DOOR-GAME BATCH FILE. This Batch file will run the
EVANG.EXE program.
EXAMPLE OF DOOR BATCH COMMANDS:
COMMAND: EXPLANATION:
------------------------------------------------------------
C: (switch to drive C:)
CD\Evan (goto evan directory)
ewdirty.exe (run the adult version)
(or)
ewclean.exe (run the clean version)
Since both versions are strategically identical and can share
the same data files, you can have both clean and adult players in the
same game. Only the displayed text will be different. Consult
your BBS docs for details on setting up batch files for different
access levels. If you decide to run only one version, the other may
be deleted to save 100k of disk space.
Your BBS software should be able to copy your drop file into
the directory where Evangelist Wars is installed. If it can't,
you will have to add a line to your batch file that copies the
drop file over to the Evangelist Wars directory.
STEP 4. Change to the evangelist wars directory and run the
setup program by typing setupew. This program will create several files that
the game needs to load. You will be asked how many days a player
must be inactive to be deleted. This setting is a matter of
preference, but must be between 10 and 100 days. Once set, it
can not be altered without restarting the game.
STEP 5. ADD THE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM TO YOUR BBS DAILY EVENT
BATCH FILE.
NOTE: EWMAINT must be run at least once a day.
COMMANDS TO ADD TO THE BBS DAILY EVENT BATCH FILE:
COMMAND: EXPLANATION:
--------------------------------------------------
C: (SWITCH TO DRIVE C:)
CD\EVAN (GOTO GAME DIRECTORY)
EWMAINT.EXE (RUN MAINTENANCE)
-------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER: Reset before a new game and run EWMAINT.exe daily
and you shouldn't have any problems. There is a file
called Evang.cfg...you need to edit it with a text
editor before you run the game the first time. The
evang.cfg is documented and an example is provided.
Good luck and Enjoy Evangelist WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
